The area around Rotorua is known for thermal hot springs, streams, and geysers, and the rock formations they produce. The one I visited at Wai-O-Tapu has the most astonishing colors of water from various kinds of minerals.

South of Rotorua is huge and beautiful Lake Taupo. I saw it overcast, in a pensive mood. Further south, the clouds broke up into sky-spanning configurations over a dry plain ringed with mountains.
